Latin dance holds a rich and enthralling history with cultural influences from Latin, African and European (Spain and Portugal) heritage. Tales of otherworldly dances (from Native Latin America and African ancestry) made their way to Europe, which meant traditional dances became heavily influenced by both the music and movement from those foundations. Typically, Latin dances are supposed to express strong emotion and desire and in some ways tell a story, thus evoking similar feelings in onlookers – another element taken from Latin and African origins.
Though there are deep rooted connections with Africa, Native Latin America and Europe in relation to Latin dancing, many of the dances developed over time in the streets of various Latin American countries such as Cuba, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Brazil. This means that Latin dances have an extra edge and a particularly unique atmosphere compared to other competitive dances. These fascinating roots paired with dancing traditions make for rhythmical and striking movements incorporated into the many dance moves.
There are many Latin dance varieties, but Freed of London was particularly inspired by Latin dances such as the Samba, Rumba and Paso Doble when we created our new range of styles.
So how do we match these rich, cultured and beautiful dances? We wanted to capture the glamour and excitement of Latin dancing, so we decided to incorporate more glitter and finesse into the new styles. Using both glitter and satin panelling on our range of dance shoes hasn’t been done before, which means our new styles therefore offer a truly unique essence, matching the distinctive ambience of Latin dancing.
As well as this, we have added higher heels to the new styles (and to some of our original styles too), adding even more of a luxurious and attractive feel. So with heels now available in 3.2” and 3.5”, competitive Latin dancers will now be able to gain extra height AND extra glamour when dancing and competing. We recently launched our wonderful new range of shoes, including the Lisa, Ashlyn and Isla, at the Blackpool May Festival.
With our new styles, elements and alterations, we truly feel as though we have done the remarkable Latin dances and their rich history justice.
