“Everyone has the right to dance” – Victoria Treviño. A simple statement to most, but there are people out there who are struggling to fulfil this basic right. In Mexico City, the admirable Victoria Treviño teaches at Ballet Joven to ensure that local dancers have the same opportunities and consideration as everyone else.
Treviño is a former student of the Royal Academy of Dance, she now uses her training to teach in her local squash club, but more importantly, she also offers free lessons to those who have come from less financially able backgrounds. As her students are often unable to pay, Victoria Treviño holds her own lessons in her garden shed which she has turned into a dance studio where everyone and anyone is welcome. .
It is truly inspiring to see so much achieved with so little to hand, all because of the pure passion and dedication that every person involved holds. So much so in fact that two students, Enya Aldaz and Sebastian Aguiñaga, from Ballet Joven have been offered the opportunity to dance in the Toronto Genée International Ballet Competition 2019.
Treviño hasn’t stopped there however, she is also actively making an effort to encourage more male dancers to get involved in ballet.
The whole scheme is incredibly uplifting and reminds us that there is always hope. Helping spread the word are friends and documentary makers Dan Lovelace and Reuben Esteban Reynoso. Dan and Reuben plan to create an eye opening documentary as they tour remote villages in Mexico and talk to Victoria Treviño and her students about the impact Ballet Joven has had on everyone involved. They are currently taking donations here to help fund the project.
The ability to dance is a gift, but is also a basic right everyone deserves, so we feel particularly inspired and excited about what Ballet Joven has done and what they continue to do for the people of Mexico City.
