Recently we published a blog about popularity in ballet with young people - we enjoyed it so much that we decided to extend it to the ballroom world.
In the last few weeks, we reached out to schools across the UK and asked them to participate in this project (all are named below) it was great to get some personal insight into this subject!
Ballroom dance is great for younger people, it’s fun, varied and can help them get active while also working their brain and allowing them to meet new people. We can’t help but wonder, however, if the current changes and trends this generation is going through has changed (whether good or bad) the popularity in Ballroom amongst a younger audience.
From the schools, we gathered that, although young dancers tend to leave classes around the age they take their GCSE’s due to stress, the amount of people attending classes before that age is only growing more and more as time goes on.
So why is it growing in popularity as the years go by? Many of the schools we spoke to offer a wide variety of dances ranging from Ballroom to Bollywood to Showdance, as well as child friendly classes – meaning there is something that caters to everyone.
We love to hear this, because we believe everyone should be able to experience the joy of dance, no matter what age or experience level!
Although there are a few more male dancers participating in ballroom dance than ballet, the females still outnumber them, so we want to see the numbers go up! However, one school pointed out that the number of male dancers joining their studio is constantly rising, which means it’s only a matter of time.
Other than this, it seems that Latin is the most popular dance choice for young people, with Ballroom and Street Dance closely trailing behind.
Either way, we were so happy to get such positive responses from everyone, and thank you again to all the schools that were a part of this project!
